Explore Our Application Process

Students interested in our scholarships for That Next Step Africa need to be nominated by a teacher or a supportive adult who can vouch for their potential. Applications are accepted annually between February 1- March 30 for the subsequent academic year. Interviews are conducted between April 15- May 15. Award decisions are announced by mid to late June. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis for exam specific scholarships (JAMB, WAEC, etc). The application process includes completing a short application form and writing an essay in English that covers:

  • Their interest in the That Next Step Africa program.
  • Their current challenges and requirements.
  • Their goals and what they hope to accomplish through the program.

Selection and Awards

A selection committee evaluates each application and awards scholarships based on the funds available. For college students, annual verification of enrollment and a good standing report or transcripts are required. The awards are sent directly to educational institutions and cover:

  • Tuition and testing fees.
  • Textbooks, uniforms, and other related costs.
  • Dormitory fees for boarding students.

Ongoing Engagement

That Next Step Africa awards can be combined with other scholarships at the recipient’s discretion. Scholarship recipients must:

  • Participate in quarterly check-ins via teleconference, videoconference, or in person.
  • Attend additional workshops and events if required.
  • Attend an annual luncheon with That Next Step Africa leadership and fellow awardees in Nigeria or Ghana.
